Liqui Moly Rim Cleaner - Product Review
« on: July 31, 2018, 05:17:43 PM »
Tyre rims, unlike the rest of the bike, are susceptible to attracting grime, dust, brake dust, chain splashing, amongst others.
Unsatisfied with the results from a regular shampoo wash, I have invested in a can of wheel rim cleaner by Liqui Moly. (Link to the product on Amazon: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login)

The cleaning process is pretty straight forward. Spray the cleaner generously across the whole surface of the rims.
Since the spray has gel like nature, it adheres to the surface easily and does not drip down.

Notice the cleaner sticking well to the top part of the rim in the above image.

Leave the rims with the cleaner on for 4-5 minutes. The spray starts turning into a deep purple color.
The change in color is an indicator that the cleaner is attacking the grime / dirt effectively.

Use a light sponge to scrub the rims if needed be.
I use the sponge side of a regular ScotchBrite dish scrubber gently to clean the harder stains.

Post the light scrubbing, its time to wash off the cleaner. The recommendation is to use a jet spray, but I have found that a bucket of water and some shampoo works just fine.
The rims look like this post the cleaning, shining their way to glory!  ;D

Now that the rims have been cleaned, its time to clean the whole bike and hopefully take it for a short spin (though this will dirty up my bike again)

Points to note:
  • The cleaner has an oily texture. Be sure to clean the rims thoroughly.
  • The odor can be a little to strong, especially within minutes of spraying the cleaner.
  • Make sure to wipe clean the brake discs extra carefully, especially if some parts of the cleaner ends up on thm. Post wash, pump the brakes multiple times till you are convinced that the braking power is at its full mojo.
  • Do not use a hard, abrasive scrubber for stain marks, like a steel sponge. This will scratch up the wheel rim badly. Always use a soft sponge for scrubbing. That will do the trick.
  • You can ignore the expiry date on the can. Liqui Moly products work well for years after their expiry date. Even their own website claims this.
