Coolant Issue + Engine seizing
« on: July 03, 2018, 08:26:45 PM »
Update : Sold my bike and planning for getting a different bike.(3 aug 2018)
Update 2: Bought myself a Yamaha R3

Hello everyone,

The coolant issue has become a huge concern in the ownership of Dominar 400 in my life and others as well i suppose.

I have been facing this coolant loss issue from a couple of Months now  >:( >:(

I first noticed when my bike ODO was around 13000 kms.

It wasn't that severe, So i went to the bajaj SC and asked to top it up.

Later after about 1500 kms on the odo ( when i went to udupi ride with a friend, He owns a Duke 390 new edition), I found that the coolant level has gone wayy down and hence topped it up with Motul Inugel expert (green) which i had purchased in amazon.

I checked for external leaks, punctures or any physical damage on the coolant system, But didn't find any  :-\

So i did some research on this and many of the dukes (new edition) had the similar issue  ???

I checked with friends and other biker clubs, It was not a common issue at all, few KTM 390 siblings had similar issue of coolant loss of about 50 to 100 ml in 2000 odd kms but that was due to the fact that KTM heat up like hell & is understandable.

But why the hell is there a coolant loss in Dominar? dominar doesn't heat up anywhere close to a ktm 390.

Later after doing much work on this issue, Found that its a known issue with a few of new KTM bikes and the coolant mixes with Engine oil  :o

But i didnt notice any foamy or milky oil substance in the oil inspection window.

However i did my 4th service with a trusted mechanic : Ajmal  :D

And i continued to plan the " Dream Ride to Spiti and Leh"

I started riding from home itself(banashankari, Bangalore)

So after reaching nagpur which is about 1150 kms from home, I observed that the coolant reservoir was literally empty.
I though it was because of the hot weather 42?C ( silly me ), Then i topped it up.

While resting and checking the bikes, I found that My friend's Duke 390's swingarm bolt's nut was missing  :-[
So enroute we went to mehdipatnam ktm where the representative Zain was extremely friendly and helpful.
They didnt have the bolt in stock, So he removed one from a new bike and put it to my friend's duke ! ( Talking about customer experience !)

Then continued the ride, Later after 1000 odd kms (in agra), I saw that the coolant reservoir was empty again  :o :o
What the hell, It's just been 1 day since i topped it up and again it went dry??!!  :o

without a second thought i topped up the coolant again as i had to continue my ride.

This is the time i got to know there is definitely something wrong with the bike and decided to show in a bajaj SC.

We went to bajaj SC in agra and they asked to leave the bike there for a day and they would inspect it and would need more time to change parts.
But since we were in a tight schedule to complete the ride, It was definitely not feasible to leave the bike for a day to check an issue somewhere out of my city!

Then after reaching Chandigarh, the coolant level was less than minimum. ( this is after about 900 kms)  :'(

later the coolant started to dry up very soon, Like every 500 to 600 kms.
I bought 2 more bottles of coolant and kept them.( same motul inugel as it was the only one available in Bajaj sc in agra)

After completing spiti, Coolant was getting dried up every 300 to 350 kms.

However i kept inspecting the oil window and performance of the bike to see if there could be any coolant mixing in the oil, but I didn't observe any other issue apart from coolant loss.

Hence i continued my ride.

after completing the whole trip and coming back towards home, We took the srinigar to jammu highway, After 30 odd kms of crossing Srinigar, I heard a loud screeching noise from the clutch side of the engine i was doing 90-100 kmph at this time.

just after the noise, Followed a loud "THUD" sound and the rear wheel kind of locked up and the bike came to a scary halt with a loud "trrr" "trrr" "trrr" sound.

This was the time i understood i was " FUC*ED UP !"

Engine was jammed to halt and the gear was stuck in 6th gear.

Bike wouldn't move an inch.
So i removed the front sprocket and chain so i can atleast tow or push the bike.

There are no service centres around srinigar to service a dominar. We contacted a bajaj sc in jammu & was informed There were no staff neither do they have any parts(Talk about "Premium bike and premium service" and their pathetic ad: HAATHI mat palo) RE had coverage until the last town on India Pakistan border, india-China border and india-Tibet border.
Hell yeah, they had a huge showroom and dedicated service center in leh. And 100% spare parts availability.

Now i had only 1 option. Ship the bike to bangalore and fly back home :-( after all those years of planning, this is a disaster. I had 3000 kms more to cover and other places to visit.

After about 11 days i got my bike delivered to my home and immediately took it to khivraj service station in Kasturba road Bangalore.
Spoke with the service people and manager there and left my bike for service.

Later i Went there and got to know that bajaj is rejecting the warranty claim as there was no " BAJAJ OIL" used in the first three services.

Although Auto service in banashankari is an authorised bajaj SC, They dont stock any bajaj oil, Even for 150 pulsar.

So they had changed to motul in the first service itself, I liked the performance and heat retention characteristics of Motul so i was ok with it, Even in 2nd service i gave to auto service and they replaced with same Motul 7100 10w50.

I continued to like the performance of Motul so didn't give a thought about using bajaj oil.

To be frank, I never really went through the manual i got with my bike, I always referred to the one that is available on the internet(export batch manual), In that there is nothing mentioned about using only " BAJAJ OIL" for warranty.

Why this double standards?
Isn't the same dominar being exported worldwide? Or are they giving different quality bikes to different countries?

After seeing the symptoms, I really feel there was something wrong with the engine itself and using motul had nothing to do with it.
Also many people using bajaj oil religiously are also having the same coolant problem.

When in the service center, i saw a brownish paste in the engine casing, Which is caused by coolant mixing with Engine Oil.
But Service center people refused to accept that fact and kept mentioning i didn't use bajaj oil.

But i will try me best to claim warranty or atleast on a few parts as the coolant getting inside my engine could've been the cause of the failure of my engine.

After a lot of huddles and fights with bajaj customer service, their escalation and management department for weeks, they agreed to give partial warranty on the engine.
So the total bill was like 34000 INR and I ended up paying 17300 INR.

My Suggestion to you all, : Please service your bike at regular intervals and atleast have a bill of bajaj oil mentioned in every service of your bike to claim warranty .

About the coolant issue: It prevails.

Thanks Shreyas for sharing your experience. Moved your post to new topic, as this is very important.

Very sad that you had to face all sorts of issues on your dream ride.

Also I don't understand why Bajaj should deny warranty when the same grade oil is used.

Hey Shreyas!

Thank you for the info. According to the ARAI rule book a manufacturer cannot force you to use an engine oil of a brand however, they can recommend one for best use.

In the manual page 23, there is mention of the recommended oil from bajaj for warranty benefits however, there is no saying if you cannot use anything else.

I personally feel this should be challenged with the authorities and this is just like one of those ponzi schemes to make money for the company, I have paid my dues and I want to use what I am comfortable with n not what someone suggests!

Also, I am under the impression that bajaj had not officially announced anything and this is with the service centre to decide. Write an email to bajaj, challenge this in court.  Don't let it go.

We have too many people struggling cos all of us are taking these things at our own linience.

Hey Shreyas Bro,
Nice written about your experience but also feeling very bad to what happened with your bike. I hope they fix it soon and hand over your bike at the earliest so that u can be back on the road. Now yes Bajaj will blame you for not using or servicing the bike on time just for them to make some bucks. Don't worry All is well

Dear Rohit,

Please read the page number 39 point 5 in the owner manual regarding the mandatory warranty terms.

Hi Shreyas.. Since Auto service BSK is authorized SC and using Motul Oil, then why dont you approach them once?
Literally they are the ones used Motul on your bike.
If warranty gets void because of Motul then they shouldn't be using it.. I feel something is fishy here..

Can you update whats the current status of the bike?
The repair work started or still under warranty discussion??

They have started the work by ordering the necessary parts, but nothing has been changed yet.
I'm running behind people to get help and warranty claim.
Hoping for the best.

As mentioned by Nelson why don't you get the work done at Auto service, they should get the warranty as they have filled in Motul.

My bike is ready after waiting for about 26 days.
Need to pick it in Monday as they said they will run for a few kms for testing and give me.

As for the warranty, I'm not getting it.
Just getting major discounts on parts and labour.

Update :

Got my bike on 23 July 2018. (Yesterday)

Warranty has been claimed on major components like the gear assembly, crank shaft and rod, piston and bore kit.

Other consumables I had to pay for myself.(clutch assembly and other parts)

So this is a big relief.
Hopefully this will fix the coolant issue as well.

Finally it's good to hear that ur beast is back, so how much did you have to shell out from your pocket ?
Anyways ride safe as the engine is as good as new now and ur break in starts again. Ride safe and hope all issues are resolved.

17.3k  :( well that's sad but good thing is it done. In the group someone said SVC only is putting motul now wat about that. So can one use motul or not and not avoid warranty.?
