Cone set issue
« on: June 26, 2018, 01:54:27 PM »
I have faced cone set issue as early as 4000kms on my ODO. Lived with that till 3rd service and got it replaced but again after another 5000kms issue started and that typical tak tak noise while braking started coming, SC people tighten the set but the handling was never smooth as before.
The weak rear brake was one of the major factor as per my observation. But expected Bajaj to provide a better quality as Dominar being a heavy bike.

I have faced the cone set issue and have replaced the part.

Just after my 10k service at around 10500 odo, I felt my handle to be very rigid to turn and I was not feeling confident while doing turns, either side. Got it checked at Popular Bajaj, SA said it's the issue with cone set and it may have to be replaced.

Wonder why the cone set should go so early in the lifecycle of the bike. SA says it would be due to high pressure wash, but common, doesn't the bike built to take at least so much. After all bikes are built to run in the open, isn't it?

I definitely think there is quality issue with the cone sets, as I have come across more than 50 cases of cone set replacements. And they are not cheap, including part and labour they cost around 2500, that's a big money.

Hi guys,

Even I have faced the coneset issue.
It started after odo reached some 8000 kms.
Lived with it till odo was 14000 kms where the issue was no more bearable.
Got it replaced from Ajmal in 3rd service.

Bike ran without any kind of issues for 5500 kms in the rough and bad patches of spiti and ladakh.
The coneset was tightened at 4500 kms after the coneset replacement.

Will update if I face the issue again!

@KK even after spending that money on replacement, we are not assured to run trouble free for even 10k kms,
As you quoted, at present I dont have confidence to corner the bike
Looks like mine is due for second set of replacement.. Thats a sad story

The cone set suppose to last for some 50K Kms or more
But in our case some may replace 3 times while reaching 50K kms.

@Shreyas,
Guru do we need to regularly tighten the cone set? As you mentioned you done it after some 4500 kms.

Without the center stand its really difficult to make out how loose or how stiff is the handle.

I recently got my consent changed at 13800kms and it was unbearable to ride with the way it was pulling to one side. It cost me 1584₹ but life is too less. Must be something to do with the heavy front setup and the soft front suspension which seems to nose dive for every minor braking. If it fails once again, then I will look into an aftermarket higher quality bearing. Anyone has any idea as to what other options do we have?
Honda Aviator (2012-2014), KTM RC200 (2014-2017), Dominar 400- (2017- present), Duke 390 (2017-present)

Riding is not my passion, it is my motivation.

Can you share the location or details of the one who replaced the cone set?. After replacing my cone set at 13K, also tightened the new one at 18K again.

The handling makes a whole lot of difference.
The dominar cone set is same like any other Bajaj bikes,
A set of metal balls are glued using greese and kept at top and bottom part of the handle shaft.
The handle will glide from one side to another very smoothly if the cone set is in good condition.

During the pressure wash, if the water gets into the cone set, it washes away the greese and result in rusting of metal balls,
The handle become hard or uneven movement from one side to another side,
The handling confidence will come down day by day as the handle is either too firm or too loose.
Attached a pic for the reference.

If the bike feels like its dragging a bit to the right could it be a cone set issue?
The bike has not fallen or met with any major accident.
